The Oscars

14:46:00
The 89th academy awards ceremony which took place on 26th February 2017, was presented by the AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.) The oscars event honoured the best films of the previous year 2016.  As this event is hosted in California USA, the event was broadcasted in the UK on only a couple of television channels which included Sky Cinema and NOW TV.

The triple award winning film 'Moonlight' won Best picture, and 'La La Land' won six awards with 14 nominations. 'La La Land' was incorrectly announced the winner of 'best picture',  just before 'Moonlight' was correctly clarified the actual winner.

Moonlight had became the very first film with an all black cast to win 'Best picture' at The Oscars. Despite there were no Action Adventure films that won any Oscars, I was still very impressed with the films that won their well deserved awards throughout the evening.

Colour correction vs colour grading

13:17:00

Colour processing in the production of films is now done digitally due to advanced technology. These colour footages can be fully transformed and become extremely enhanced with just a few simple steps.
The two main types of colour manipulation are called colour correction and colour grading and are both used in different ways to be effective to the viewers.

Colour grading:

Colour grading is a process that includes multiple changes to the footage which can change the visual tone to a film. Colour grading is used as a brush over process just like a picture would be painted for a purpose. These changes include:
  • Removing objects
  • cinematic looks
  • Shot matching
  • Shape masks
Colour grading is a much more advanced and professional process compared to colour correction. Due to it being high end, it is not used in that many film industry products. So, when the editor of a product is making it, they must take into account that if they want more detailed colour profiles, they will have to prepare for longer rendering times.

Colour Correction:

Colour correction on the other hand, is a singular process that just involves any minor adjustments to an image/video from its original/raw appearance.

The corrections include:
  • Contrast
  • White balance
  • Exposure
If there are camera mistakes in a certain footage, colour correction is useful for covering these mistakes. So, from a professional point of view, you should colour correct your footage whenever you can so the footage looks significantly improved.

Dubbing over for additional sound effects for our short film

03:40:00
During our lesson time, Robert and I went to a quiet meeting room to record some dubbing over sounds for our characters movements for the short film. We did this because during the filming days , we did not successfully record all of the appropriate/intended sounds that we wanted so we had to do it ourselves. We mainly did this for our villain character 'Crimson' with a belt and coat as it sounded very like the movement we wanted to hear.

Test shots

12:04:00
Robert and I thought it would be useful to record some practice footage before the actual car chase with Oliver Hounsel being the stunt driver. The footage we recorded would hopefully replicate what we want to record on the real day of recording (on the 19th March.) We went up to East Hill (our film set) to record some practice shots of the vehicle we are using driving down the road several times with the camera mounted in different places every time. These clips below are a couple of Go Pro recordings of the practice car scenes.

The GO Pro shots were better than the DSLR shots as the DSLR shots were shaky without the image stabilisation feature which the Go Pro did have. We would need to adjust the settings on the Go Pro for the actual day of filming so the wide lens effect doesn't spoil the real footage.

Photography shoot for ancillary tasks

10:29:00
For my two ancillary tasks, Robert has agreed to do the same thing to set up a photoshoot with a green screen so we can both take quality photographs of our actors individually for our film poster and double page spread magazine. These posters and magazine pages will help attract the audience to watch out short film. High quality photographs are always used in the majority of action/adventure films just like in 'James Bond', 'Mad Max', 'Harry Potter' and 'Star Wars'. I wish to replicate the conventions of these film posters as they make the subject matter in their posters to be 'the best of quality'.

Robert and I invited Luke (Zeb) and Morgan (Jack) to attend out photoshoot we had set up in the dark room at out school, with their costumes on so we could take photographs of them in different positions/angles. The green screen propped up behind the actors gave us the advantage of easily removing the background out when it came to editing on Adobe Photoshop.

Robert and I took it in turns to take certain photographs of our two actors. We both had different shots we wanted to take for our ancillaries so taking it in turns was a good idea. We based our camera shots/angles on typical action/adventure posters and magazine photographs. These camera shots increased our ideas to create successful and typical posters in the style of action/adventure posters.

Experimenting on ancillary poster ideas with shots from photoshoot

09:37:00
After Robert and I finished shooting some quality photograph shots of our main characters in front of a green screen, we decided to create some initial poster backgrounds with some of our favourite photos we shot on the day. The following images are some of my initial poster ideas :

During the process of editing these posters, I had picked up a lot of new skills including how to crop a single image, create new layers, shade and rub out certain areas as well as being able to use special effects to enhance the photographs I was using.

Timeline of credit openings

10:29:00
After thorough planning and deep considerations from Robert and I, we have designed a fully detailed timeline of our main opening credits which flow throughout our 5 minute short film. We have inserted the credits in appropriate places where we feel they link to the film the most without distracting the viewers from the film itself:

Our first rough draft of our A2 short film

06:06:00
This is our Main short films first draft with a full structure of the story of the film. This footage has not yet been edited properly and is just to see how our film is going. So no sound or special effects or even colour correction has been integrated yet into our film. Also the speech of our bounty hunter masked character villain needs to be added with a distorted voice-over. However, from myself and Roberts first impressions, we are both very happy and impressed with out first draft and have positive thoughts towards finishing the project.
Credited actors starring include:
Luke Dix
Louis Vickery
Morgan Taverner
James McCullin
                                                                                      Harry Cockayne

Day 4 | Short film

16:17:00
Robert,  myself and the rest of the actors went up East Hill on the 10th Februaryto re-shoot the shots we had missing from the rest of the footage. Robert and myself made sure all of the actors were dresses identical to their last day of filming. Some mistakes that we fixed through reshooting during day 4 included actors clothing items being worn in different ways. For example, during day 3 of recording, Jacks bomber jacker was zipped up, however during day 4, it was unzipped, which will definitely cause confusion to the audience watching.

This video shows the comparison of a certain mistakes that occurred from day 3 of filming (22nd Jan) and day 4 of filming (10th Feb.)

the car chase scene will be filmed on the last day of filming (day 5) which will require Luke to be in the shot when the car shoots past him (Volkswagen Golf GT TDI) driven by Oliver Hounsel.

Day 4 | Filming Preparation

06:01:00
Robert and I are currently preparing our 4th filming reshoot day for the interrogation scene as there were some shots which definitely needed improving. Shots that we needed to do again include the shot reverse shot of Morgan and myself staring at each other, as well as Luke staring at Morgan during the interrogation and finally, the introduction shot of my character 'Crimson'. These shots are following the storyboard we have made, but we also wish to experiment with more shots to improve our short film.

The times and costumes we are using for this scene have been acknowledged by all of the actors so they know what to do and when to attend. This filming day is slightly different to the rest as we are filming day 4 on a school day, so we all have to ask for permission to miss a day of lessons to do our short film. I will be bringing the props needed for our film and Robert will be bringing all of the essential filming equipment.

The weather forecast for filming day 4 is basically the same as the last filming day so we are grateful for this, so the footage should look like it is all filmed on the same day for realistic reasons.

Filming our main scene

01:36:00
At 11 o'clock on sunday morning, I met up with all of the actors committing to be in our film in Ottery St. Mary and we all travelled up to East Hill where our filming would take place. Once we all arrived up there , we met up with Robert (my filming partner) and started to explain the plan/script out to the other actors and prepared the set with props positioning etc.

From 11:00am - 2:00pm , we filmed our interrogation scene which went very well and great quality footage was captured by Robert and myself. The actors did what they were told and the props were used effectively.

Shortly after, our car chase crew arrived (Oliver and Ellis) in their two Ford Fiestas at 2:00pm which were driving through East Hill while Robert and I were recording different camera shots of them till 4:00pm.

At 4:00pm, everyone was starting to get very cold and the day was getting dark so we decided to call it a day and finish. This also was because our main Canon DSLR cameras batteries were both dead and the memory card became full.

Overall the day of filming went very well and we obtained some very good footage. However , we cant tell how well it went until we review all of the footage we've got on the macs back in the classroom. When we do this, we will then be able to make a decision if we need to re-shoot any certain scenes. From my point of view, I feel that we will probably need to reshoot  a lot of the car chase scene as I felt that we didn't get enough footage or a variety of shots.
