Final finished Short Film

04:29:00
After thorough editing and final touches, Robert and I have finished our A level media short film that consists of 5 minutes. This final version of our film includes improvements with the sound levels, visual effects, crisp editing and an improved car escape scene. Robert, myself and all of our cast/actors are very proud of the work we have produced and we are all looking forward for showing our official short film to our audiences.

Short Film - Draft 3 with Audience Feedback

14:10:00

As we now have successfully collected all of the necessary/complete set of footages for our short film, we have now completed a third draft for our audience to view for more feedback and impressions. This showing to the audience of our 3rd film draft was a good process as it gives us time to improve the areas which the audience feel needs work on before the final hand in deadline in May. This 3rd draft also included the inserting of the final car chase scene and tweaking the colour corrections of the footage. The overall feedback from our class audience for our 3rd draft included the following:

  1. Car shot looks exciting and leaves story on cliff hanger.
  2. Colour grading shots are very good.
  3. Film is now looking professional and is flowing smoothly.
  4. Improve the sound levels as they are uneven.

Day 5 | Filming Preparation

13:19:00
For the final car escape shots for our short film, Robert and I have been thoroughly organising the equipment we need to use. The footage for our short film so far looks very good in my opinion and looks genuine like a real action/adventure film would look. We are very keen to finish our short film now in time for the 'Oscars' ceremony at our school where all of the student’s short films and music videos are presented on a big screen.

As we need a stunt driver for our car escape. I have contacted a friend of mine who is confident at driving cars at high speeds. We have told him to attend the film set at East Hill at 12:00pm so we can get on with the last final shots. We plan to use a variety of shots with the DSLR camera, Go Pro and the iPhone 6s. We will need all of the filming equipment we have used in the past for our other filming days except for the trial-pod as the car chase doesn't require it at all.

Test shots

12:04:00
Robert and I thought it would be useful to record some practice footage before the actual car chase with Oliver Hounsel being the stunt driver. The footage we recorded would hopefully replicate what we want to record on the real day of recording (on the 19th March.) We went up to East Hill (our film set) to record some practice shots of the vehicle we are using driving down the road several times with the camera mounted in different places every time. These clips below are a couple of Go Pro recordings of the practice car scenes.

The GO Pro shots were better than the DSLR shots as the DSLR shots were shaky without the image stabilisation feature which the Go Pro did have. We would need to adjust the settings on the Go Pro for the actual day of filming so the wide lens effect doesn't spoil the real footage.

Day 4 | Short film

16:17:00
Robert,  myself and the rest of the actors went up East Hill on the 10th Februaryto re-shoot the shots we had missing from the rest of the footage. Robert and myself made sure all of the actors were dresses identical to their last day of filming. Some mistakes that we fixed through reshooting during day 4 included actors clothing items being worn in different ways. For example, during day 3 of recording, Jacks bomber jacker was zipped up, however during day 4, it was unzipped, which will definitely cause confusion to the audience watching.

This video shows the comparison of a certain mistakes that occurred from day 3 of filming (22nd Jan) and day 4 of filming (10th Feb.)

the car chase scene will be filmed on the last day of filming (day 5) which will require Luke to be in the shot when the car shoots past him (Volkswagen Golf GT TDI) driven by Oliver Hounsel.

Day 4 | Filming Preparation

06:01:00
Robert and I are currently preparing our 4th filming reshoot day for the interrogation scene as there were some shots which definitely needed improving. Shots that we needed to do again include the shot reverse shot of Morgan and myself staring at each other, as well as Luke staring at Morgan during the interrogation and finally, the introduction shot of my character 'Crimson'. These shots are following the storyboard we have made, but we also wish to experiment with more shots to improve our short film.

The times and costumes we are using for this scene have been acknowledged by all of the actors so they know what to do and when to attend. This filming day is slightly different to the rest as we are filming day 4 on a school day, so we all have to ask for permission to miss a day of lessons to do our short film. I will be bringing the props needed for our film and Robert will be bringing all of the essential filming equipment.

The weather forecast for filming day 4 is basically the same as the last filming day so we are grateful for this, so the footage should look like it is all filmed on the same day for realistic reasons.

Filming our main scene

01:36:00
At 11 o'clock on sunday morning, I met up with all of the actors committing to be in our film in Ottery St. Mary and we all travelled up to East Hill where our filming would take place. Once we all arrived up there , we met up with Robert (my filming partner) and started to explain the plan/script out to the other actors and prepared the set with props positioning etc.

From 11:00am - 2:00pm , we filmed our interrogation scene which went very well and great quality footage was captured by Robert and myself. The actors did what they were told and the props were used effectively.

Shortly after, our car chase crew arrived (Oliver and Ellis) in their two Ford Fiestas at 2:00pm which were driving through East Hill while Robert and I were recording different camera shots of them till 4:00pm.

At 4:00pm, everyone was starting to get very cold and the day was getting dark so we decided to call it a day and finish. This also was because our main Canon DSLR cameras batteries were both dead and the memory card became full.

Overall the day of filming went very well and we obtained some very good footage. However , we cant tell how well it went until we review all of the footage we've got on the macs back in the classroom. When we do this, we will then be able to make a decision if we need to re-shoot any certain scenes. From my point of view, I feel that we will probably need to reshoot  a lot of the car chase scene as I felt that we didn't get enough footage or a variety of shots.

Day 3 | Short Film

14:09:00
Myself, Robert and the rest of the film crew spent the afternoon filming up on East Hill on the 22nd January. We assembled all of the essential equipment including the trio-pod, camera and boom microphone at 11:15 am. We then straight away went into the filming of the interrogation scene.

The day went well overall, and had some bad parts throughout, including some bad footage and incorrectly recorded sound. We also forgot to shoot some certain shots we wanted to shoot which automatically made Robert and I know that we would have to do another day of filming in this location. So we had no choice but to wait until the next filming day. Also the actors acting qualities decreased as the day went along due to tiredness and the sheer brutal coldness of the rural area. The good parts of the day included some funny moments that got us through the day swell as some very good quality shots that we will use for our main short film. Overall, our actors are very happy to perform in our short film production and are thrilled to be acting in roles they all enjoy.

We managed to film some of the interrogation scene which we will use for our actual short film, and we successfully completed the running chase scene which we were very proud of producing. We were able to accomplish this by myself driving my car at a slow speed, while Robert films Luke/Morgan running on the other side of the road.

Day 3 | Filming Preparation

13:53:00
For our next day of filming on the 22nd January, Robert and I have already begun preparing our equipment and plans for this 3rd day of filming. This next day of filming will take place in our next scene which is located on East Hill in Ottery St Mary (a much more rural area than Exeter.) I have been making a rough checklist that I have ticked off what equipment Robert and myself are planning to take with us to use, as well as making a Facebook chat for our actors to confirm their attendances to these filming days. Below is a scanned image of the rough checklist:

At 11:00 on the 22nd January is when we plan to see our actors at the set on East Hill and are hoping to shoot the main interrogation scene until 15:00pm and complete the running/chase scene until 16:20.

We will bring the same filming equipment  swell as the Tri-pod for stable filming shots and parts of the costumes for our character 'Crimson' and Morgans character 'Jack'. I will also bring all of the weapon props including the guns and smoke grenades which we will handle with caution. Also , the forecast is meant to be just sunny spells and grey clouds which is exactly what we want for our media filming.

Due to our previous experience with the last two filming days, we expect the location of the set to get busy as the day goes on, so we are making signs to Waern the public to avoid the set so we are not disturbed in a polite manner.

More filming retakes

15:41:00
Robert, Harry and myself thought it was crucial that we retook the opening scene of our short film once again to obtain better quality, and a much larger range of footage so we have more to play with in the editing stage. We thought we were more successful today with our footage captured due to us planning this day in much more detail.

Day 2 | Short Film

13:25:00
Robert and I attempted our 2nd attempt of filming the Exeter scene with our main antagonist actor 'Harry' on the 22nd December. We were certain from the first filming day attempt that we needed to reshoot mostly all of the first scene due to the bad weather and the densely populated area od the car park. As we used the first day of filming as an 'experimentation', we were more organised for our 2nd filming attempt and improved our last footage from the first shooting day.

The weather was much better on this second filming day compared to the first. The cloud cover in the sky was perfect on the second filming day and some sunlight appeared as the morning progressed. Also there were not many disruptions throughout the morning which was much better than the first day. We also arrived in advance 2 hours earlier (08:00am) than the first day of filming (10:00am) which gave us plenty of time to film quality shots before the public started to enter the car park and interrupt our filming.

We experimented with several different shots in this day 2 of filming, and we straight away got back to editing our film with this valuable footage as soon as we got back to you computers. One thing that both Robert and I found very outstanding included the image stabilisation on my iPhone 6's which gave us incredible shots for our opening sequence. However, swell as using the main DSLR camera, the iPhone's camera had a permanent auto saturation which made the footage look pretty with nice colours, but this was not what we wanted for our gritty British action film, so this will make more work for us to remove/edit when we get back to Premiere pro.

We had a couple of mistakes on our day 2 of filming, including myself accidentally walking into the camera area, as well as Robert accidentally covering his finger slightly over the flat iPhone lens which ruined the iPhone footage.

We also played around with some playful shots that involved the vehicle to 'glorify' it a bit. So due to the great weather , we attempted this with no problems, here are some examples.

Form a whole mornings worth of filming, we got some excellent footage that meant we didn't need to come back to Exeter to reshoot anymore of the first opening scene. Robert and I were much more pleased with the overall success of the day and are looking forward with the rest of our filming production.
