Camera Techniques

11:37:00
For this years A2 short film, myself and Robert want to drastically improve our camera planning and techniques. Even though I am not the camera-man for this years or last years media project, Robert is , and I can still help him plan and advise the best camera shots that will improve the footage and conventions of our film. Therefore, both Robert and I have researched on a social media video website called 'You-Tube' for tutorials on camera techniques which have helped us with the basics to improve the camera works for our short film.

This video gives a good overview on the different camera techniques that this person uses. His video has given us ideas on how to improve our camera-works on set. One technique that we intend to implement into our film this year includes 'a shallow depth of field', which helps the viewer focus more on a certain subject within the film.

Our Fist Animatic Draft

04:32:00
Robert and I have created an animatic consisting of our storyboard images. We have included some shot angles we are keen on and some action scenes. We have also included a rough backing track to give more emphasis, suspension and meaning to our storyboard.
The animatic has definitely helped us realise how our film is progressing and is giving us clues of what needs to be improved. Our next storyboard will consist of improved sketches, shortlists and time frame lengths as well as progressing the story onwards by adding many enigmas and conventions where appropriate to get more of an audience interest.

Our first storyboard draft

04:10:00
Robert and I have now generated our first draft of our storyboard, our ideas are original with the help of certain short films we have watched. Our storyboard is illustrating the main character who is being held hostage by an unknown gang/organisation that are demanding for a certain possession that the protagonist owns. Despite the protagonist’s lack of speech and refusal, the tension of the story increases and violence levels rise. After the approaching fight scene and car chase, the protagonist escapes from near death after losing the chaser organisation between a train crossing. The first draft has given Robert and myself a base line solution to our storyboard. We are next going to construct an animatic which will give us a good insight on how our film will be presented. Shortly after this, we will create a more defined storyboard draft with more details of shots, time lengths etc.

Tzvetan Todorov's Narrative Theory

12:57:00
//an exploration of form in creativity by Ale mui (alemui)

Todorov's narrative theory claims to be followed by every film made. However, not all films follow the same equilibrium pattern. Which is why it is vital for myself to research the theory so I know which films do and don't follow this theory. This theory will help me state if my short film follows this theory or not.

British Films

05:56:00

Robert and I have decided to do a British film for our short film because firstly, American films are purely high budget which we certainly don't have the money to make and we don't know the culture, or techniques to create an American piece well enough compared to British films.

What Robert and myself really like about British films include the way they relate to our culture and the fact that they show hidden meanings throughout including the gritty British background stereotype.

Our British film will include influences from different current popular films including: 'The Kingsman’, ‘Snatch’, 'Kick Ass' (for the action scenes), 'Spectre' and 'Lock stock and two smoking barrels'. We will also look at the film ’Legend’, the story about the Kray twins as we feel that these films present an excellent understanding of the 'British film industry.

Shot lift for filming

08:51:00
Due to the completion of mine and Roberts storyboard and animatic, we have made a shot list of every single shot that we plan to film throughout the filming days. We plan to bring a copy of this shot list on set with us digitally on a phone, and on paper.

Here is the full shot list for our short film coursework production:
